What is a Flooring Waste Factor?

A waste factor (also called "cutting allowance" or "overage") is the extra flooring material you need beyond the exact square footage of your room. This accounts for:

  • Cuts at walls and edges — Every row needs end cuts
  • Pattern matching — Especially for wood grain or tile patterns
  • Damaged pieces — Some boards arrive damaged or get damaged during install
  • Mistakes — Even pros make occasional cutting errors
  • Future repairs — Smart to keep extra material for later

How Much Waste Factor Do You Need?

5-7% Waste

Simple, square rooms with straight installation. Minimal cuts needed.

10% Waste (Standard)

Most residential rooms. Rectangular spaces, some obstacles, standard installation.

15%+ Waste

Diagonal installation, complex room shapes, many doorways, or pattern matching.

Waste Factor by Flooring Type

Flooring TypeTypical WasteNotes
Hardwood (straight)10%Add 5% for character-grade wood
Hardwood (diagonal)15%More angled cuts = more waste
Laminate10%Click-lock is efficient
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)10%Similar to laminate
Tile (standard)10-15%Breakage adds to waste
Tile (diagonal/pattern)15-20%Complex patterns need more
Carpet10-15%Seam placement matters

The Waste Factor Formula

Total Material = Room Sq Ft Ă— (1 + Waste %)

Example: 200 sq ft room with 10% waste = 200 Ă— 1.10 = 220 sq ft needed

Pro Tips for Flooring Contractors

  • Always round up to full boxes — You can't buy partial cartons
  • Keep 2-3 extra planks — For future repairs (match dye lots)
  • Wider planks = more waste — Room shapes don't always fit wide boards
  • Character-grade wood has more defects — Budget extra for culling
  • Measure twice, order once — Running short mid-job kills profit margins
